The Food and Drug Administration has been asleep at the wheel for the last decade, thanks in part to George Bush’s decision to pack the agency with his industry-friendly allies. As a result, we’ve seen hundreds of product recalls when inspectors and companies fail to do their jobs and properly test medical devices and pharmaceuticals. And as we’re starting to see in the case of Johnson & Johnson’s DePuy hip implant, the FDA and the company actually knew the dangers associated with their product, but decided that consumers didn’t need to know how dangerous their hip implants were.
