Another Carnival Cruise Ship, the Carnival Triumph, is dead in the water in the Gulf of Mexico and being towed to port in Mobile, AL according to a statement on from Carnival’s CEO, Gerry Carhill. This comes almost two years after Carnival’s abrupt abandoning of its port in Mobile. The ship is expected to arrive at port on Thursday, without power or basic amenities.
“Currently, public and cabin toilets are operational in certain sections of the ship, power has been restored to a limited number of elevators, and some power in the Lido dining area is providing for hot coffee and limited hot food service,” says the statement from Mr. Carhill.
However, ABC News is reporting on the conditions for the elderly and the disabled, which are deplorable.
This is another in the long line of cruise ship incidents that have plagued Carnival Corporation over the past few years. The Carnival Splendor was disabled due to an engine fire in 2010; how the engine fire disabled all of the power on the ship remains unknown. The tragedy of the grounding and sinking of the Costa Concordia and the engine fire of the Costa Allegra are present reminders of the potential dangers on the sea.
“Unfortunately, due to the provisions of the cruise line’s ticket contract, which passengers are forced to accept, passengers may be severely limited in their ability to recover for their suffering,” says Gerald McGill, a board certified admiralty attorney with the Levin, Papantonio law firm.
