On Friday, Texas Governor Rick Perry (R) was indicted on two felony charges for abusing the power of his office. Perry has come back to call the charges outrageous, that he was simply exerting the authority of the office and that he was justified in doing so. Now he’ll have to go to court and defend that stance though, and he’s the first Texas governor in nearly 100 years to have to do so.
But that doesn’t slow Perry down. On Sunday, Perry appeared on Fox News and stated that if he had to do it all over again, he would make the same decision.
“I very clearly, I very publicly, said as long as that individual was running that agency, I had lost confidence in her, the public had lost confidence in her.”
Perry referred to the Democratic district attorney from Travis County. The lawsuit Perry faces comes from his attempts to coerce her resignation after she was convicted for a drunk driving arrest. At the time, Perry made threats to veto funding for programs under her administration.
“I stood up for the rule of law in the state of Texas,” Perry said. “And if I had to do it again, I would make exactly the same decision.”
Now, as Perry arms himself for a courthouse showdown, party Republicans are clamoring to support him. Bobby Jindal, Ted Cruz, Jeb Bush and more are coming out to “#StandWithRickPerry”.
They’ll get to stand with him in court now, as that’s the next stop for this Texas governor.
