Republican Texas Gov. Rick Perry has been scheduled for an October 13 related to two felony indictments for abuse of power. However, Perry thinks that he should be exempt from adhering to court orders, like appearing for said hearings, reported The Huffington Post.
Because Perry will be in Europe the week of Oct. 13, he asked the presiding judge to excuse him from the hearing. The request has drawn the ire of San Antonio special prosecutor Michael McCrum who has some choice words for Perry.
Perry is “asking for special favors, and as far as I’m concerned, he’s not entitled to it. I don’t think there’s any reason why Mr. Perry should be treated any differently from any other citizen who’s required to be in court.” McCrum continued, “I’ve never seen a defendant make such a mockery of our system of justice.”
An Austin-based grand just indicted Perry with two felony counts of abuse of power when he threatened to cut funding for a public corruption investigation unit after the Democratic head of the unit didn’t resign after a drunk-driving conviction. Texas is really on a roll here.
Perry expecting a judge to excuse him from a court appearance is absolutely ludicrous. The sad thing is that Perry stands a better chance of having his request granted. However, a regular, blue-collar would never have such a chance.
Perry is planning to run for president in 2016. And like many other Republicans, he thinks he deserves some sort of special treatment from the justice system. Thankfully, he did say that this term will be his last as a Texas governor. Hopefully that will bring some balance and semblance of sanity to the Lone Star State.
