South Carolina’s Republican governor, Nikki Haley, made comments about the Confederate flag that prove what the rest of us already know: the GOP is marginally racist and favors corporations over American citizens.
In a debate earlier this week, when asked about the fact that the Confederate flag still flies on statehouse grounds, Haley said,
“What I can tell you is over the last three and a half years, I spent a lot of my days on the phones with CEOs and recruiting jobs in the state. I can honestly say I have not had one conversation with a single CEO about the Confederate flag.”
While it’s nice that Haley is trying to bring jobs to her state, CEOs who don’t necessarily live in South Carolina shouldn’t get to dictate what flags are flown over government buildings. That decision should be made by the state’s residents; nearly 30 percent of South Carolina’s population is black, and it’s probably safe to say that some of them, along with South Carolina’s more progressive citizens, might have some complaints.
But since they don’t donate millions of dollars to Haley’s political campaigns, apparently their opinions don’t matter.
