John Coleman, the ousted co-founder of The Weather Channel has been burning the television airwaves with his climate change-denying nonsense for the last week. Yesterday, Coleman appeared on the CNN show Reliable Courses with Brian Stelter to exercise another tirade about climate change.
Coleman begins his rant by rebuking his title as a “climate denier,” but claiming himself as a scientist.
“I resent you calling me a denier. That is a word meant to put me down,” Coleman began. “I’m a skeptic about climate change. And I want to make it darn clear, Mr. Kenny is a not scientist, I am. He is the CEO of The Weather Channel now, and I was the founder. Not the co-founder.”
Coleman’s reasoning is completely wrong. Skeptics are merely doubtful whereas Coleman outright denies the existence of climate change of any sort. Also, despite Coleman’s delusions, he is not a scientist. Coleman is a television anchor. He got his degree in broadcast journalism over 50 years ago. Although Coleman lacks the expertise to comment on climate science, he persists.
“Climate change is not happening. There is no significant man-made global warming now, there hasn’t been any in the past, and there’s no reason to expect any in the future. There’s a whole lot of baloney.”
Coleman continues to make these claims, but he never provides any information to support his claims. What’s more, Coleman seems so sure of himself even he keeps making unfounded assertions. He just keeps repeating that there’s no climate change and says The Weather Channel, which released a statement last week distancing itself from Coleman and his claims, has “drunk the Kool-aid.”
Coleman is making himself look less like a credible source in the debate and more like a conservative kook. He just swings around the fact that he co-founded The Weather Channel as if that helps his cause. Weather Channel CEO David Kenny appeared on the program and disavowed Coleman.
“We’re grateful that he got us started 32 years ago,” said Kenny. “But he hasn’t been with us in 31 years. So he’s not really speaking for The Weather Channel in any way today.”
Not only does Coleman make hapless media appearances, but he recently wrote an open letter to the UCLA Hammer Museum regarding a recent presentation about climate change. Reported by ThinkProgress, Coleman stated in the letter “there is no significant man-made global warming at this time, there has been none in the past and there is no reason to fear any in the future.”
Coleman is nothing more than a media opportunist. There’s finally a platform of media that will give him air time. Coleman will appear on any network that’s willing to give him the chance to be on TV and speak on camera. Retirement must be hard on some people.
