Head of the Catholic League Bill Donohue went on Fox News yesterday to criticize President Obama’s remarks at the National Prayer Breakfast about heinous acts committed in the name of religion.
Donohue was upset that Obama actually spoke about the terrible things Christians have done throughout history and because he didn’t condemn acts of Islamic extremists enough.
“Humanity has been grappling with these questions throughout human history,” said Obama. “And lest we get on our high horse and think this is unique to some other place, remember that during the Crusades and the Inquisition, people committed terrible deeds in the name of Christ. In our home country, slavery and Jim Crow all to often was justified in the name of Christ.”
Donohue said Obama should have just spoken about religion in broad terms, not specifics.
“Who could argue with that?” said Donohue. “But he didn’t do that, did he? He spoke with specificity. He singled out the Crusades and the Inquisition.”
But Obama DID mention violence committed by non-Christians — he spoke about the acts of “violence and terror” committed by members of the Islamic State by members claiming to “stand up for Islam.”
Donohue’s reaction is the epitome of unjustified Christian outrage. Christians have committed acts of violence in the name of their Lord for centuries all over the globe – including America. But for some reason, mentioning them is seen as attacking the Christian faith.
Discussing history isn’t an attack. Those events happened. And as we all know, those who don’t learn from their past are doomed to repeat it.
