Rick Perry is offering his opinion on the causes behind the shooting in Charleston, South Carolina. It seems that Perry thinks the shooter, Dylann Roof, may have had a more of a drug problem than a racist problem.

Perry appeared on Friday’s episode of Steve Malzberg’s show. During his interview he wanted to quickly put away the notion that Roof’s access to a gun was too easy. Instead, he thinks that America needs to focus more on the problem of easy access to drugs, not guns, or racism.

“This is the M.O. of this administration, any time there is an accident like this,” said Perry. “The president is clear, he doesn’t like for Americans to have guns and so he uses every opportunity, this being another one, to basically go parrot that message.”

Malzberg then asked Perry if he thought it was correct to call this an act of terror.

“I don’t know, but I think the facts, once we get them – there were more people than that killed in Paris,” Perry said. “This was a crime of hate – we know that.”

“It seems to me, again, without having all the details about this, that these individuals have been medicated and there may be a real issue in this country from the standpoint of these drugs and how they’re used,” he said.
