Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump has filed a $500 million lawsuit against the Univision network claiming Univision is destroying his political campaign, reported RawStory. Trump vowed to sue Univision after the network cancelled its airing of the Miss USA pageant in response to Trump’s racist comments about Mexican immigrants.
According to a statement from Trump’s office, he is suing because he thinks Univision is trying to smother his First Amendment rights regarding his campaign.
“The decision was, in reality, a politically motivated attempt to suppress Mr. Trump’s freedom of speech under the First Amendment as he begins to campaign for the nation’s presidency,” read the statement. “They will stand behind lying Brian Williams, but won’t stand behind people that tell it like it is, as unpleasant as that may be.”
Univision decided to dump its airing of Trump’s July 12 Miss USA pageant after delivering a prejudiced rant during his candidacy announcement. Trump said that Mexican immigrants are rapists who bring nothing to America except crime and drugs. He also said he would build a wall along the Mexican-American border and make Mexico pay for it.
After Univision severed ties with Trump, American broadcast giant NBC also announced that it will no longer continue business with the real estate mogul. Trump is considering filing a lawsuit against NBC, as well.
Univision responded to Trumps lawsuit in a statement.
“We will not only vigorously defend the case, but will continue to fight against Mr. Trump’s ongoing efforts to run away from the derogatory comments he made on June 16 about Mexican immigrants,” read the statement. “Our decision to end our business relationship with Mr. Trump was influenced solely by our responsibility to speak up for the community we serve.”
Wake up call Mr. Trump. It’s not Univision that is destroying your political career. It’s your racist and ignorant views of the world, and of course your ability to bankrupt endless companies.
