Donald Trump rightfully received a lot of flak for saying that Sen. John McCain (R-AZ), a POW for five years during the Vietnam War, wasn’t a war hero, which he is. Despite his sacrifice to the country, McCain couldn’t give that kind of dedication and sacrifice to his first wife.
While McCain was held captive from 1967 to 1972, his first wife, Carol, was involved in a near-fatal car accident that left her permanently scarred and unable to correctly walk. When McCain returned from Vietnam, the marriage suffered when he started looking at other, healthier women.
“McCain is the classic opportunist. He’s always reaching for attention and glory,” said Ted Sampley, Vietnam veteran and campaigner for veterans’ rights. “After he came home, Carol walked with a limp. So he threw her over for a poster girl with big money from Arizona. And the rest is history.”
McCain no longer saw Carol’s beauty and left her for 25-year-old Cindy Hensley, while he was 42-years-old. Hensley was the heiress to James Hensley, who founded one of the largest Anheuser-Busch distributorships in America. Not only was Hensley young and beautiful, she was rich.
Republicans like to make John McCain out to be some saintly American deserving of everyone’s worship. However, they overlook the fact that McCain dumped a woman who suffered a severe car accident and waited several years for him to return home from war. It’s just despicable.
