Former Texas Gov. Rick Perry (R) said more people should bring their guns to movie theaters to prevent incidents like what happened in Lafayette, Louisiana, reported the Huffington Post. It was only a matter of time before one of these GOP ammosexuals broke their silence.
“These concepts of gun-free zones are a bad idea,” said Perry. “I think that you allow the citizens of this country — who have been appropriately trained, appropriately backgrounded, know how to handle and use firearms — to carry them. I believe that, with all my heart, if you have the citizens who are well-trained, and particularly in these places that are considered to be gun-free zones, that we can stop that type of activity, or stop it before there’s as many people that are impacted as what we saw in Lafayette.”
Perry said the Lafayette shooter, John Russell Houser, was able to obtain a gun because “somebody didn’t do their job” in enforcing already existing gun laws. Perry hasn’t a clue of what he’s saying. Current gun laws in America allow people to visit gun shows and purchase firearms without background checks. Some independent vendors don’t even check IDs. The problem isn’t a lack of enforcement; it’s a lack of better regulation. Ring of Fire reported that the gun used by Houser to shoot eleven people was legally purchased at an Alabama pawn shop.
Also, does Perry really believe that gun owners have the training to stop a gunman on a planned rampage, without the vigilante taking more innocent lives in the process? It’s ludicrous. Even well trained police officers will tell you this is a very difficult task.
After dodging questions about gun regulations last week, Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal (R) echoed Perry’s off-base sentiments. Perry and Jindal are only speaking for the GOP gun nuts that make up a large part of their constituencies. They want public support at the expense of common sense.
