John Oliver on Last Week Tonight, discussed the lack of representation of citizens of the District of Columbia. According to Oliver, D.C.’s one representative in Congress has the power of a child over the progress of an episode of Dora the Explorer.
That one representative is named Eleanor Holmes Norton, and she is barred from voting on any pertinent legislation.
“The people of D.C. clearly deserve a greater voice in their own affairs, and they’ve actually come tantalizingly close to getting a voting representative in Congress,” said Oliver. “In 2009, a bill to give D.C. a vote was introduced in the Senate, and the Senate did the most dickish thing imaginable: passing it, but with a little addition.”
