New evidence indicates that unarmed black men are disproportionately shot and killed by police officers in America, reported the Washington Post.
Although black men make up only 6 percent of the American population, they make up 40 percent of all people shot and killed by police every year. The Washington Post also reported that unarmed black men are seven times more likely to be shot and killed by police than unarmed white men.
“In many of the 24 shootings of unarmed black men. . . the threat was not readily apparent, raising questions about the officers’ use of deadly force,” reported the Washington Post. “In each case, the situation rapidly spun out of control. In some cases, police have not said why they opened fire. In most of those cases, investigations are ongoing.”
The most horrific instance of recent police killings of unarmed black men is the incident involving 43-year-old Samuel Dubose of Cincinnati, Ohio. Dubose was shot in the head while still seated in his car during a routine traffic stop. The argument of offending officers is to say it’s all in self defense. However, that argument is quickly wearing thin.
