A federal judge ordered Kim Davis, a Kentucky county clerk, to jail for contempt of court after she informed the judge that she will not follow her constitutional obligation to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples, as she claims it violates her religious beliefs and “God’s authority.”
According to CBSNews, the judge ruled his only alternative was to jail Davis because he did not believe she would comply with his order even if she were fined. She was escorted out of the courtroom by a deputy, and turned over to the custody of federal marshals. The judge then warned deputy clerks that they must issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples or face fines or jail. The deputy clerks are to return to his courtroom later today to announce their decision.
