Much like Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) in 2013, another congressional Republican is beating the government shutdown drum over a government program that’s hated by the GOP, this case being Planned Parenthood.
Rep. Tim Huelskamp (R-KS) is on a warpath to defund Planned Parenthood, and he doesn’t care if the GOP leadership gets in his way. Republican House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) are trying to avoid another shutdown, but Huelskamp wants Planned Parenthood defunded, shutdown or not.
“I cannot and will not fund a vile, racist organization who specializes in convincing mothers to kill their children and then selling their baby parts to the highest bidder,” said Huelskamp to Talking Points Memo. “During the funding debate two years ago, Mitch McConnell finagled a $2.8 billion dam for his home state. And now when it comes to keeping his pro-life campaign promises, I’m pretty certain he still knows how the process works.”
He doesn’t seem to give a damn about the cost of defunding Planned Parenthood. Huelskamp and other Republican lawmakers have pledged to stand against funding Planned Parenthood even if that means causing another government shutdown.
