Republicans are quick to try and dismiss discussions of passing smarter gun restrictions. Instead, they want to try and blame poor public mental health care. John Oliver calls out the GOP for running to the issue of mental illness, because even if it were true the GOP is terrible on that issue too.
“If we’re going to constantly use mentally ill people to dodge conversations about gun control, then the very least we owe them is a fucking plan,” said John Oliver.
Oliver discussed how quickly Mike Huckabee blamed mental health issues for the shooting at Umpqua Community College. Oliver pointed out that at the same time that Huckabee is lecturing the nation on needing to do better for those suffering from mental health issues, when he was governor of Arkansas, the National Alliance on Mental Illness gave his state a grade of “D-“.
