In 2013, nearly all South Carolina Republicans in the U.S. House of Representatives and Senate voted against giving disaster relief funds to New York after Hurricane Sandy. The state is now hurting for disaster relief, and Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC), who also opposed Sandy relief, is leading the charge to persuade the federal government to help.
“Let’s just get through this thing, and whatever it costs, it costs,” Graham said on CNN.
Wolf Blitzer pressed Graham on why he voted against Sandy relief in 2013. “I’m all for helping the people in New Jersey,” Graham added. “I don’t remember me voting that way. I don’t really recall that, but I’d be glad to look and tell you why I did vote no, if I did.”
Graham totally remembers voting against Sandy relief, and so do GOP South Carolina Reps. Joe Wilson, Jeff Duncan, Trey Gowdy, and Mick Mulvaney. Now that South Carolina is in turmoil, GOP politicians are asking the government for federal aid.
This isn’t to say that the state shouldn’t get aid, it should, but the Republicans in South Carolina should recognize their hypocrisy (although they probably won’t).
