More Americans are beginning to accept that climate change is real and poses a serious threat to the population and the planet.

According to a survey conducted by the University of Michigan and Muhlenberg College, 70 percent of Americans believe the science regarding global warming. The number has been increasing since 2008. More notably, acceptance of climate science has increased among Republican voters and evangelicals.

Many of the respondents held a “strong recognition of recent weather patterns” with a focus on warmer local temperatures and severe droughts. The new acceptance is also a response to Pope Francis’ pro-environmental message, as he reaches Catholics. New acceptance of climate change science has resulted in a higher acceptance of solar power, which has a 90 percent approval rating.

The Republican anti-climate narrative is holding less sway over the American public. Nearly all of the conservative climate denial comes from GOP politicians who are trying to protect the fossil fuel industry.
