The story of what has happened to the 43 Mexican students and their families is terrifying. For nearly a decade, Mexican cartels have run rampant through Mexico killing men, women, and children, with local authorities powerless to stop them, either because they are afraid or bought by the cartels.
This kind of terror is the exact same fodder that Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump uses to promote his message of hate, fear, and xenophobia.
As the Huffington Post reports:
In September 2014, Mexican police attacked a group of students from the Ayotzinapa Rural Teachers College who had traveled to the city of Iguala to commandeer buses they planned to use to shuttle other students from the state of Guerror to Mexico City for an annual demonstration commemorating the 1968 Tlatelolco student massacre.
Mexican authorities have largely pinned the blame for the attacks on the two local political figures. In November, the former Mexican Attorney General Jesús Murillo Karam said that police attacked the students on Arbarca’s orders and speculated that the former Iguala mayor wanted to keep the students from protesting a political event for his wife that evening. Police later handed off the students to members of Guerreros Unidos, who killed them and incinerated their bodies at a trash dump in the neighboring town of Cocula, Murillo Karam said.
Abarca and his wife disagree that they had any involvement in the deaths of the students and say that local authorities, under the control of local cartels, pressured them to go along with the story. Considering the hold that cartels have on local governments throughout Mexico, it’s tough to determine who’s lying.
This story is exactly the kind of thing that Trump relies on to bolster his platform. He taps into the fearful minds of conversative voters with stories from other countries to win popularity. His campaign is based upon death and mayhem.
