By the time the 2016 election rolls around, we will have three sitting Supreme Court Justices over the age of 80. Why does that matter? Because the president could have as many as 3 Supreme Court appointments to make during his or her term.
This puts the fate of the Supreme Court for at least a generation squarely on the shoulders of the next president, and with the Court’s current 5 to 4 split on ideology, a single retiring Justice could give the president to change the direction of this court.
Ring of Fire’s Farron Cousins discusses this.
