Pope Francis has done a great deal to improve the public image of the Catholic Church by being what most imagine a true religious leader should be, of course some GOP extremists are not happy with the Papacy’s new face. The most recent example of this image rejuvenation lies in comments Pope Francis made on Monday about the inevitability and danger of climate change.

“I can say to you ‘now or never’,” he said on Monday, according to Reuters. “Every year the problems are getting worse. We are at the limits. If I may use a strong word I would say that we are at the limits of suicide.”

It is a good feeling to be able to include the leader of the Catholic faith in the long list of rational people calling for climate reform, and it is particularly timely considering the Paris Climate Summit which began on the same day the Pope spoke about the need to act.

Some may criticize the Pope for his bold remarks, but his words indicate a strong shift in religious discourse indicating that religion may now work side by side with scientific evidence, rather than against it. What a spectacular evolution!
