On Tuesday, the Senate unanimously voted to push through legislation which would allow the families of victims of the 9/11 attacks to sue the nation of Saudi Arabia for its role in the terrorist action.
White House administration have spoken against the legislation strongly, as has Saudi officials who are prepared to begin selling off their American assets in protest.
Though the legislation may not make it past the White House, this approval by the Senate is a groundbreaking case which would open the door to other legislation like it. Allowing private citizens of one nation to bring legal action against the government of another nation would mean that the same action could be taken against the U.S.
The bill is now headed to the House.
