Her name may sound like a joke, but her political platform is anything but, and now Bernie Sanders is headed out on the campaign trail once again to fight to elect congressional candidate Zephyr Teachout.
Article continues below video.
Teachout, a law school professor, is currently seeking the congressional seat for New York state’s 19th District against Republican John Faso.
Teachout is one of the most promising Bernie-era progressive candidates, and his visible support could go a long way in ensuring her success.
Many were disappointed last month when the Senator’s support for Florida’s Tim Canova fell through. Canova told The Young Turks that while Bernie had offered his support initially, he never followed through. When Canova lost to incumbent and former Democratic chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz, many blamed Sanders’ lack of support, in part, for the loss.
Shortly after, Bernie announced that he would be campaigning for his former opponent Hillary Clinton. Though it made sense that he would support the Democratic nominee to defeat Donald Trump, the move stung many progressives who remembered his months of railing against the establishment candidate.
Now, though, Bernie may be headed for redemption as he heads back to the campaign trail for Teachout on Friday.
Teachout has already gained national attention for her progressive platform, and just weeks ago made headlines when she demanded a debate – not with her congressional opponent – but with his corporate donors.
For those of us who still feel the fire of revolution smoldering in our stomachs, Teachout may be the candidate to stoke those coals into a roaring fire once again.
