Just like many other Democracy-respecting Democrats, former Vice President Al Gore has extended an olive branch of sorts to President-Elect Donald Trump, appealing to the man to open his eyes on climate change and work toward the salvation of the planet.
Gore no doubt feels that his attempts at peace, while nauseating, are absolutely necessary if he and others hope to save the planet and the human population.
In an op-ed published on Climate Reality Project’s website, Vice President Gore addressed the President-elect and asked that Trump cooperate to save the planet.
“Last night President-elect Trump said he wanted to be a president for all Americans. In that spirit, I hope that he will work with the overwhelming majority of us who believe that the climate crisis is the greatest threat we face as a nation.”
The chance of that is slim to none, and Gore should really try to look elsewhere for his climate solutions.
The United States had finally reached a respectable climate agreement with the rest of the modern world in December of 2015, and just over a year later, we are set to see that same agreement cast aside by the Trump administration.
Trump won’t walk back his climate denial stance – it’s too politically useful as a Republican. And if he can somehow convince more Americans that China is to blame for the whole thing? Even better.
Just this week, we learned that Trump was planning to appoint a climate denier to head the EPA – and yet Gore makes no mention of that abhorrent appointment.
So while we applaud Gore for having the humility to beg Trump for basic acknowledgement of scientific facts, we cannot imagine that it is worthwhile effort. Gore said that he is “inspired” that we will all pull together, but how can we when climate denying Republicans run the show?
Tell us what you know, Gore. We’ve had too much of the baseless moral platitudes. Give us our next steps – give us a real plan.
