Despite having been vocally critical of President Obama for not taking part in all of his daily security briefings, President-elect Donald Trump has already shown an abysmal record at taking his own briefings, setting the tone for the type of president he will be.
During an interview airing on Fox News Sunday, the PEOTUS appeared very defensive when he was asked why he isn’t accepting the bulk of his security briefings, allowing Vice President Mike Pence to take most of his cast-offs.
Said Trump:
“I don’t have to be told ― you know, I’m, like, a smart person. I don’t have to be told the same thing in the same words every single day. I don’t need to be told … the same thing every day, every morning ― same words. ‘Sir, nothing has changed. Let’s go over it again.’ I don’t need that.”
Currently, Trump accepts security briefings just once a week, with no indication that he will step up his briefings once he becomes president. We learned this week that Trump would be staying on his hit “Apprentice” show as Executive Producer, but maybe instead of doing that, he should be doing his job.
In retrospect, the trend of ignoring security briefings was a key flaw in George W. Bush’s presidency as well. Notably, one of the briefings Bush never read was one which emphasized Bin Laden’s commitment to harming the west just months before 9/11 took place.
These security briefings are a vital part of the president’s role in keeping America safe. How can we depend on President Trump to protect American when he’s already failed before he’s even begun?
