On Tuesday afternoon, Senator Bernie Sanders issued a public statement in response to Trump’s accusation that anywhere from three to five million votes in the 2016 election were lodged illegally in favor of Hillary Clinton, handing her the popular vote.
Sanders comments came after Press Secretary Sean Spicer doubled down on Trump’s rigged election claim, saying that he, too, believed millions of votes were cast illegally. Though the White House press corp pushed for Spicer to provide some source of evidence for their joint claims, there was none available.
Referring to the statement Trump made to leaders of Congress on Monday, Sanders called the claim, “a total nonsensical statement,” before doubling down and calling it “delusional.”
This isn’t the first time, unfortunately, that Sanders has had to refer to Trump as “delusional,” though it is the first time he has called him so as president.
Unfortunately, Sanders’ statement about the U.S. president seems to be absolutely true.
The Senator continued:
“What I fear about that statement, and what is something we should all worry about … [is that] he is sending a message to every Republican governor in this country to go forward with voter suppression.”
Sanders’ warning here is clear: Republicans are always striving to suppress the vote – particularly that of voting Democrats – and with a President crying “fraud,” they’ve got all the reason they need to charge ahead with even more repressive voter laws.
