America’s laid off and fired citizens already have to jump through a series of hoops to receive unemployment benefits. Now Congress has decided to add another: drug tests for unemployment applicants. They voted to repeal a Department of Labor rule that made it harder for states to drug test unemployment applicants. States claim this saves money and ensures a ready and able workforce. In reality, it’s a drain on resources and an invasion of privacy that keeps the working class down by potentially locking them out the benefits they paid into as employed citizens for years.
