Vice President Mike Pence has had a bit of a scramble this week after some journos started paying close attention to his behind-the-scenes actions and decided that the Vice President appeared almost to be preparing for a 2020 presidential run.
After it was discovered that Pence has set up a Super PAC, taken a trip to the political mecca of Iowa, and has met with some of the GOP’s biggest donors, reporters understandably assumed that the Vice President seemed to be gearing up for a 2020 run.
This, along with Pence’s convenient absence from much of the Trump-Russia goings-ons, mean that he may be priming to run against his own President in 2020, or preparing to take his spot if Trump doesn’t make it that far.
In response to the allegations, Pence got defensive, vehemently denying the possibility in both a press release and tweet. The next day, some of Pence’s team appeared on cable news to defend his honor and deny that the Vice President was involved with anything that might undermine President Trump.
Later, Pence’s team confirmed to reporters that he had indeed registered a PAC, met with donors, and visited Iowa. Still, they denied that it was in any way in relation to 2020.
Whether or not Pence and his team are telling the truth about 2020, it makes sense that he wouldn’t want to make a news story out of it – his own boss might see it. After all, Trump has gone on a rampage as of late, turning on first one staffer and then another when they fail to bring him glory.
If Pence hopes to stay on Trump’s good side and make it 2020, he had better keep whatever scheming he is doing under wraps.
