Between the name calling, the constant vacations, and the looming threat of nuclear weapons being fired, there is absolutely nothing “normal” about the Trump presidency. The biggest concern at this point is that Americans become complacent or begin to accept that this kind of behavior is normal. We have to continue to resist and demand more from our President, as Ring of Fire’s Farron Cousins explains.

Transcript:

I remember back in 2016 I was watching the presidential debates between Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton, and my daughter, who at the time was five years old, had just started kindergarten a few weeks ago, walks into the room, looks at the TV, watches Donald Trump talk for about 30 seconds, then she looks at me, the 5-year-old sweetest little girl you’d ever meet, and she says, “What’s wrong with him?”

It was at that moment that I realized what was really happening in this country. Donald Trump, as we all now know, was dumbing down the office of the presidency even before he made it to the presidency itself, before he was sworn in, by being on the campaign trail, by winning the Republican nomination, and then winning the electoral college vote he dumbed down this country to a level that I don’t know that we can recover from.

Between his constant investigations into the activities of both himself, and members of his campaign, that are still ongoing, Michael Flynn, Manafort, Kushner, John Jr, Trump himself, Reince Priebus. Between the name-calling on Twitter where he insults people for their looks, like sleepy eyes Chuck Todd, as he called him, Corker Flake McCain. The reporter that he mocked at the campaign rally who had a disability.

The plugging of products, and books, and TV shows, and making fun of TV shows that get poor ratings on Twitter, the constant vacations, and the golfing, and the bankrupting of the Secret Service, because he makes them go with him on vacations so much that the organization has no more money. The psychotic episodes, and the breakdowns that his staff has reported, him throwing things at televisions because he’s so angry.

Antagonizing foreign powers online. Insulting Kim Jong-un on Twitter as if that helps the dialogue, or the situation in any way. What is wrong with him? My five-year old daughter a year ago nailed it. What’s wrong with him? I wish I had an answer to that. I wish I would have been able to give her a proper answer, and give her an answer today, because that’s what we owe our children. When they look at what Donald Trump is saying, and doing, and how he’s acting, and they start repeating that, and acting that way in schools, which we’ve already seen an increase in bullying, in spite of Melania’s anti-bullying campaign that for reason glosses over the activities of her husband.

We deserve better but, more importantly, we have to make sure that we never forget that this is not normal. We cannot ever become complacent. We cannot ever start accepting this, because the second we do that’s the new bar for the next president. However, low Donald Trump takes it, we have to be right there to raise that bar higher for the next election, because if not, what’s next after Trump, Sarah Palin, Michele Bachmann, Louie Gohmert? That’s the level of stupidity that he has taken the office of the president, and every day we need to remind our fellow citizens, and more importantly, remind our own children that this is not normal, and this is not okay, and we are going to fix it for you, so that you have a better future than what we are currently living in.
