XKCD is a webcomic created by Randall Munroe, a physicist who once worked on robots at NASA’s Langley Research Center. The series is known for Munroe’s focus on often complex areas of math and science and his ability to make them funny and easier to understand.

Munroe’s latest comic uses information from the United States Drought Monitor (USDM) to show just how bad things have gotten in the Golden State. California’s current drought level according to Munroe? Ludicrous.

California

That adjective is fairly accurate, as California is approaching its thousandth day of drought. According to data from the USDM, 99.8 percent of California is in a state of “severe” drought, and more than half is in an “extreme” drought, the worst on the Monitor’s five-tiered scale.
