In secret, House Speaker John Boehner invited and set up a Congressional address with Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu, reported TruthDig. Here’s the kicker: once everything was put in place, only then did Boehner tell President Barack Obama.
According to political blogger Juan Cole, who is syndicated by TruthDig, “The reason for bringing Netanyahu is that Boehner wants to craft a super-majority in Congress that can override Obama’s veto of new sanctions on Iran.” Obama has been resistant of any sanctions on Iran in hopes of using diplomacy to halt Iran’s nuclear development programs.
Iran has stated that its nuclear enrichment program is intended to lessen dependency on fossil fuels for electricity. However, because “producing enriched uranium for fuel via centrifuges is always potentially double risk, this [nuclear] program has alarmed the US, Europe, and Israel.” Cole noted that the current Iranian Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has issued fatwas forbidding the production and storage of nuclear weapons, citing their incompatibility with Islamic law.
However, members of the Iranian Revolutionary Guards Corps are the thought leaders of those who oppose the orders of Khamenei.
The Republicans seem to be aligning themselves to push for another Iraq War-style campaign, where they see a perceived threat (usually in their own minds), and act in the most aggressive way possible first. As Cole has said, “The US Joint Chiefs of Staff looked at this issue and have decided that only an Iraq-style invasion, occupation, and regime change could hope to abolish the nuclear enrichment program.”
Netanyahu has been named as one of the original, international war hawks that supported the invasion of Iraq. He asserted that Saddam Hussein had weapons of mass destruction (we all know he didn’t), and he used similar fear-mongering tactics exploited by the like of Dick Cheney and Donald Rumsfeld.
This move by Boehner is a political sneak attack on President Obama to drive support for sanctions against Iran, which would stall any progress made by just using peaceful diplomacy.
