Republicans have been grappling to maintain a respect for Pope Francis while trying to disrespect his position on climate change. It’s a tough line for them to walk.
At the same time though, it’s a tired line for them to walk. Republicans want to invoke religious principles when they suit the party’s economic interests and they want to ignore their religious principles when those principles would undermine their economic and political gain.
