Bernie’s Record on Civil and Human Rights is Very Powerful – “Black Lives Matter” Needs to Understand the Facts

Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) has faced a bit of criticism from some minority groups because they feel he hasn’t focused enough on minority issues. The truth is that Sanders’ record on civil rights is long and impressive, reported AlterNet.

Black Lives Matter protesters interrupted Sanders’ address to Netroots Nation, an annual conference for progressive liberals. To the group’s credit, civil rights issues deserve national focus. But, the protesters either ignored or overlooked Sanders’ long history of fighting for civil rights.

Over the last 50 years, Sanders has fought for the civil rights of black people, Hispanics, and the LGBT community. In 1962, Sanders was arrested in Chicago for protesting public school segregations. Last year, Sanders engaged with immigration activists when Hillary Clinton dodged their questions of executive action regarding citizenship.

“Black Lives Matter” is an important group, essential to fighting for civil rights. However, Sanders has been fighting that fight for nearly half-a-century. He’s not ignoring the plight of minorities in America. He’s been fighting alongside them for 50 years.
