On Monday, the World Glacier Monitoring Service reported that the world’s glaciers have reached their lowest level in 120 year, when record keeping began.
Published in the Journal of Glaciology, the findings give more evidence that global warming is rapidly changing the Earth’s massive glacial shelves. The first ten years of the 21st century, according to the report, saw the fastest loss of glaciers in recorded history.
“Globally, we lose about three times the ice volume stored in the entirety of the European Alps every year,” Michael Zemp, director of the World Glacier Monitoring Service, told Huffington Post.
The world is projected to lose 30 inches from its glaciers this year.
