Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) announced that he will oppose the Iran nuclear deal and side with pro-war Republicans, reported the Huffington Post. Schumer’s decision is proof that money talks because much of his contributions come from pro-Israel groups that oppose the Iran deal.
Schumer is slated to replace Sen. Harry Reid (D-NV) as the Senate’s Democratic Leader once Reid retires in January of 2017. Schumer’s decision to oppose the Iran nuclear deal puts him at odds with the White House and other top-ranking Democrats within the Senate. In short, he’s off to an awful start with the Democratic caucus he intends to lead after Reid’s departure.
“No real Democratic leader does this,” wrote MoveOn, an anti-war group. “If this is what counts as ‘leadership’ among Democrats in the Senate, Senate Democrats should be prepared to find a new leader or few followers.”
Schumer has a close relationship with the American Israel Public Affairs Committee and has a large Jewish constituency that’s known for opposing the Iran nuclear deal. Jewish political groups have donated thousands of dollars to Schumer, and the senator answered the call of money instead of reason and global stability.
He followed the money and supported pro-war politics that puts him at odds with his caucus and positions him with pro-war Republican hawks. Make that one more Congressional sellout in Washington.
