Contrary to what pro-Israel war hawks would expect, a dedicated group of 340 rabbis sent an open letter to Congress on Monday in support of the Iran nuclear deal, reported The Hill. The letter also urged members of both chambers to support the agreement.
“We encourage the members of the Senate and House of Representatives to endorse this agreement,” read the letter. “Most especially, we are deeply concerned with the impression that the leadership of the American Jewish community is united in opposition to the agreement. We, along with many other Jewish leaders, fully support this historic nuclear accord.”
Ameinu, a “national, multi-generational community of progressive Jews in North America,” distributed the letter to Congress. Members of Ameinu sought to quell the widespread belief that all leaders of the Jewish-American community opposed the Iran nuclear deal. However, there are a number of pro-Israel and Israeli war hawks who’d rather risk war with Iran, than a logical deal. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is opposed to the suggested accord.
Netanyahu has spoken out loudly against the Iran nuclear deal, and denounced any diplomatic solution with Iran of any kind. Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) recently announced his opposition to the Iran nuclear agreement much to the anger and disappointment of the White House, several senate Democrats, and anti-war advocates. They in turn will withhold $8.3 million in contributions from Schumer and like-minded senate Democrats who also opposed the Iran proposition.
Ameinu seeks to prove that it’s in everyone’s best interest to support the nuclear deal. Although the group has some reservations about it, they have realized that no accord at all could led to worse consequences.
