Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker (R) signed a bill on Friday that’s designed to prohibit certain investigations into bribery and political corruption. It sounds like Walker wants to protect himself and others like him.
On Friday, Walker signed a bill designed to dismantle Wisconsin’s John Doe law that supports investigations into political corruption and misconduct. The law now makes the John Doe law applicable only to investigations into violent and drug-related crimes.
Years ago, Walker was the subject of a political corruption and funding scandal. However, that investigation was halted by state judges, and they ordered that all evidence related to the case be destroyed. Walker and the judges had financial backing from the same entities.
“What this new law does is it exempts from the John Doe process crimes that are committed involving elections, campaign finance and ethics,” said Jay Heck, executive director of Common Cause in Wisconsin. “In other words, the crimes that politicians would be most likely to commit. They have carved out a special exemption for themselves.”
