Pro-life know-nothings recently had a discussion about how if abortion were made illegal, the repercussions which would come from women obtaining abortions illegally would not at all be blood on their hands.
Their “logic” goes like this: If they’re pro-life (and they swear they are!), then they won’t be the ones performing abortions, so they aren’t culpable at all. Just like anything else having to do with the conception of children, if you don’t want to face the consequences of illegal and unsafe abortions, don’t do it!
The problem with this line of thought is, well, EVERYTHING.
- First of all is the fact that this discussion is being led by a man who has never and could never experience the feeling of a child growing inside his body that he neither wants nor can afford. Taking a moral high ground by claiming that he isn’t the one seeking out an abortion is extremely belittling not to mention idiotic.
- Then, there is the fact that though these two claim that pro-lifers aren’t the one giving abortions, despite the fact that pro-life people get abortions all the time. The only difference between a pro-life woman who gets an abortion and a pro-choice one is that the pro-life woman believes that her abortion, and hers alone, is a rational and moral choice, despite the dogma she ascribes to.
- Finally, it is a proven fact that women have always and will always seek to control their pregnancies because of the incredible cost, time, and wear on their bodies. The only difference between being a woman who can legally obtain an abortion and being one who can’t is that women who cannot legally abort will find another way – and that way is often deadly.
