Paul Ryan introduced his new “anti-poverty” program today – and while it has a fancy new title (“A Better Way”) – it’s more or less the same austerity plan Republicans like him put forward when they say they’re trying to fight poverty. It would cut Social Security – impose onerous new work requirements on a number of different welfare programs – slash funding for Head Start – and even do away with a new law that requires financial advisors to act in their clients best interest. Who’s Paul Ryan kidding? When are Republicans going to admit that the best anti-poverty plan is a strong labor movement coupled with a protectionist trade policy, high taxes on the rich and a regulated financial industry?
