Dylann Roof, the man who killed 9 in a racially-motivated hate crime in a Charleston church, was assaulted in prison on Thursday.
Roof, 22, is facing charges for the murder of 9 and injury of several others during a mass shooting he carried out on a South Carolina church who welcomed him with open arms.
Investigators discovered that prior to his attack, Roof had taken a sick racism tour of the south, visiting former slave plantations and other landmarks of slavery and confederacy, before finishing his tour at the Charleston church.
Roof was attacked while outside of his cell on Thursday morning by a black inmate who bolted from his cell to attack the man. There was no direct evidence that the attack was racially motivated, but the writing was clearly on the wall.
Roof’s face was bruised, but he was otherwise relatively unharmed by the attack. Roof’s lawyers say that he does not intend to press charges over the attack.
The man who attacked Roof is serving time for armed robbery and assault and battery, as well as attacking a police officer.
