After serving little over a year at the prestigious position of Speaker of the House, many Republican insiders are suggesting that Paul Ryan will step down from his position after Tuesday’s election.
“Four House Republicans, including a senior lawmaker close to leadership, told The Hill they expect Ryan to step down after Tuesday’s elections, arguing that he faces a daunting path to the 218 votes he needs to win a full two-year term leading the House GOP.”
Aides for the Speaker have denied this allegation, but the writing is on the walls and it doesn’t look good.
Ryan has had the most difficult job as Speaker facing the need to back the Republican nominee while also balancing his party’s reputation and future. Ryan has given as lukewarm support for Trump as possible, preferring silence to condemnation.
It appears though that it was all for naught as Ryan might be headed for a demotion back to a simple Wisconsin congressman – that is, until 2020 when he will no doubt join the ranks of Republicans vying for the presidency once again.
