Following the filing for a recount in Wisconsin by Green Party candidate Jill Stein, the Clinton campaign has agreed to participate in the recount efforts.
Some had questioned whether the Clinton camp would be open to a recount for fear of appearing hypocritical. After all, when Donald Trump made it clear that he might not accept a defeat on election day, he was condemned by most of the Democratic leadership.
General council for the Clinton campaign said that they did not suspect election fraud or see any reason for a recount, but would support the effort now that it had been filed.
“Because we had not uncovered any actionable evidence of hacking or outside attempts to alter the voting technology, we had not planned to exercise this option ourselves, but now that a recount has been initiated in Wisconsin, we intend to participate in order to ensure the process proceeds in a manner that is fair to all sides.”
On Friday afternoon, Stein filed the necessary paperwork required to demand a recount in the state of Wisconsin. Stein was able to achieve this by fundraising the previous few days, and Clinton supporters and progressives alike gave generously.
Wisconsin is just the first state of many that Stein hopes to file in, and if the effort receives enough donations, there could be recounts in many other states as well.
The next deadline Stein faces is in Pennsylvania, where any possibility for a recount will end at 5 p.m. on Monday.
