Big Pharma’s Devious Fight Against Fixing Healthcare

On Thursday, ProRepublica and Consumer Reports published a detailed look into the lengths the major pharmaceutical companies will go to in order to keep their treatments overpriced. From cornering the market on subject-matter experts who testify in front of Congress to paying for and influencing the studies that promote the efficacy of their drugs, big pharma is working hard to prevent competition, innovation, and public policy change that would hurt their bottom line. Angry Citizens Can’t Find Their Representatives: Congressmen Dodge Town Halls

Videos of angry crowds at Republican town hall meetings have been heavily circulated and reports of conservative Congress members avoiding public sessions are rampant in news reports. Earlier this week, Sen. Tom Cotton’s town hall was the center of attention as he faced chants, boos, and pointed questions from constituents on a number of topics. Meeting with key manufacturing CEOs at the White House today, Donald Trump couldn’t stick to the topic of job creation as he couldn’t resist bragging about the aggressive nature of his efforts to curb criminal activity by undocumented immigrants coming from Mexico, even as advisers tried to downplay such talk. Trump boasted, “You see what’s happening at the border. All of a sudden, for the first time, we’re getting gang members out, we’re getting drug lords out. We’re getting really bad dudes out of this country, and at a rate that nobody’s ever seen before, and they’re the bad...

Arizona Republicans Pass Bill to Silence Protestors

On Wednesday, the Arizona Senate passed SB1142, moving it before the Republican-controlled House. The bill would update the state’s racketeering laws to now cover rioting, while also expanding the legal definition of a riot. This would allow law enforcement officials to arrest anyone that is involved in a legal protest, if they merely suspect violence, even if the violence never occurs. While debating the bill, Republican cop-turned-Senator John Kavanagh said that the bill is needed as paid insurgents are plotting to cause chaotic scenes across Arizona and that preemptive action is needed: “Wouldn’t you rather stop a riot before...
