American Racism: Playing Into the Hands of the Oligarchy

This past weekend, the country and much of the world looked upon the events that took place in Charlottesville, Virginia with horror and revulsion. It is the most recent manifestation of a rising tide of regressive racism that started coming out of the shadows and raising its ugly head when U.S. voters elected – then re-elected – its first African-American president. It continues to be legitimized by a demagogue in the White House who tacitly gives them his stamp of approval. There has been much written and discussed about this vitriolic racism and where it comes from – and...

Trump Administration Has Talked a Good Game on Addressing the Opioid Epidemic – But What Has it Really Accomplished?

During his campaign, Donald Trump made many grandiose promises. Several Countries Plan to End All Sales of Gasoline and Diesel-Powered Vehicles Within the Next Generation – But There Are a Few Snags

Over the past few months, several nations have announced ambitious plans to phase out the use of gasoline and diesel, primarily in motor vehicles. Furthermore, although electric cars emit far less in the way of emissions, they are still not as “green”...

BUSTED! Mr. “Pharma Bro” Martin Shkreli Goes Down For Securities Fraud

After a trial lasting less than six weeks, price-gouging, blood-sucking, predatory capitalist vampire Martin Shkreli has been convicted on three counts of securities fraud. Arguably the most hated white-collar criminal in history, 34-year-old Shkreli came to public attention last year when one of his pharmaceutical companies, Turing, purchased the rights to a prescription drug Daraprim and raised the price from $13.50 to a whopping $750 for a single pill – and publicly gloated over his reprehensible action. Like the arrogant ass that he is, Shkreli refused to answer questions before a Congressional committee last year, before which he was...

Relief for Flint, Michigan: The EPA Agrees to Forgive Over $20 Million in Debt

This week, the beleaguered city of Flint, Michigan got some welcome news from the Environmental Protection Agency: cancellation of $20.7 million in debt incurred in the course of its battle for safe, lead-free drinking water. Flint’s debt was incurred as the result of loans from the EPA’s Drinking Water State Revolving Fund (DWSRF), issued from 1999 to 2003. This was a program established as an amendment to the Safe Drinking Water Act in 1996, the purpose of which was to assist states in providing clean water to their residents. The loans were used to help the City of Flint...
