While NJ Governor Christie Signs Transgender Equality Legislation, Trump Issues Ban on Transgender Service People

The right-wing GOP can certainly be a study in contradictions. Case in point: as New Jersey governor Chris Christie is moving forward on transgender equality in his state, Donald Trump is quickly moving to reverse all such gains. This week, Governor Christie signed off on S. 3067, which orders New Jersey’s Commissioner of Education to start coming up with guidelines providing “a supportive and nondiscriminatory environment for transgender students” in the Garden State’s public schools. Senators Rob Portman of Ohio and Shelly Moore Capito of West Virginia have publicly expressed doubts about repeal of the ACA. In a press release last week, Senator Capito issued the following statement: “I have serious...

Today, a federal jury in Illinois ordered pharmaceutical company AbbVie to pay $150 million in punitive damages to a plaintiff who alleged that his heart attack was the result of using its testosterone-boosting product, AndroGel. Although the jury found that AbbVie was not liable for the plaintiff’s injury, they ruled that the company had engaged in fraudulent and misleading advertising. The plaintiff, 54-year-old Jesse Mitchell, suffered a heart attack in 2012 after using AndroGel over a four-year period. Attributing his use of the product to his heart failure, Mitchell filed suit in 2014. AbbVie’s defense counsel pointed out that...
