A new study discovered that any convicted murderer in Missouri whose victim was white is seven times more likely to receive the death penalty than murderers with black victims, reported AllGov.com. Researchers at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill found that the Missouri criminal justice system so randomly applies the death sentence that it could be unconstitutional. Police profiling African Americans, and attempting to disguise their prejudice through “enforcement” of traffic or other minor offenses, often results in the eventual shooting of innocent people. Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon (D) has recently signed legislation to help stop this practice. Under Missouri’s former system, courts could endlessly fine people for their inability to pay minor traffic offenses. A tree planted in Ferguson, Missouri in memory of Michael Brown, an unarmed black teenager fatally shot by a city police officer last year, survived less than 24 hours, KMOV reported. The tree, which was dedicated by the Black Caucus of the American Library Association, was planted on Saturday.
